The popularity of adventure vacations continues to grow, particularly luxury cycle trips. Backroads is one of our favorite tour operators and we are often asked what to pack for a Backroads cycling trip. We explored more on Backroads and the value for money of their trips in another post.
Preparing for a Backroads cycling trip, or any adventure travel requires thoughtful packing to ensure comfort, safety, and enjoyment. So here we share our guide to help you pack effectively:
Cycling Apparel:
Cycling Jerseys: We pack a mix of short sleeve and long sleeve and plan on jerseys for each day of cycling (we usually change to a fresh shirt at the lunch break). Opt for moisture-wicking fabrics to keep you dry and comfortable. We prefer relaxed fit jerseys in bright colors (for safety) and these from Pearl Izumi are favorites.
Padded Cycling Shorts: Essential for cushioning and reducing saddle discomfort. Plan on a pair for each day pulse 2 extra. These from Pearl Izumi are our go-to. Inexpensive, compact to pack and comfortable.
Cycling Gloves: Provide grip and protect your hands during long rides. We pack 3 pairs, 2 fingerless and 1 pair with fingers. We like the bright colors available fro Giro Bravo.
Cycling Socks: Choose breathable, quick-drying materials. 1 pair per day plus 2 extra. The 5-packs from Bonuci are our pick.
Rain Gear: Pack a lightweight, waterproof jacket and pants to stay dry in wet conditions. This set from Alpha Cycle Gear packs really well and is super light but keeps you dry and warm if it rains.
Arm and Leg Warmers: Useful for layering in varying temperatures (or if you happen across an 80’s disco night on your travels). We prefer the lighter-weight versions such as those from Grip Grab.
Footwear: Cycling Shoes: Compatible with your bike’s pedals; ensure they’re broken in before the trip. the Shimano SH-XC100 is our choice, we appreciate how lightweight and breathable these shoes are.
Helmet: Backroads provides helmets, but you may prefer to bring your own for comfort and fit. The Giro Savant is super light – packing tip: Place your toiletries bags inside the helmet and pad with you socks for protection and efficiency.
Hydration and Nutrition:
Water Bottles: Backroads supplies water bottles, but bringing an extra can be beneficial.
Electrolyte Supplements: To maintain hydration levels during long rides.
Energy Snacks: Such as bars or gels for quick energy boosts.
Personal Items:
Sunscreen: High SPF to protect against sun exposure.
Lip Balm: With SPF to prevent chapped lips.
Sunglasses: With UV protection and, if possible, interchangeable lenses for varying light conditions.
Chamois Cream: To prevent chafing during extended rides.
Evening and Off-Bike Clothing:
Casual Attire: Comfortable clothes for evenings and non-cycling activities. In our experience, athleisure wear is perfectly acceptable on a Backroads trip and we favor Lululemon or Alo.
Swimwear: If your itinerary includes swimming opportunities.
Light Jacket or Sweater: For cooler evenings.
Luggage:
Daypack or Small Backpack: For carrying essentials during rides. We have a comprehensive guide to backpacks in another post.
Duffel Bag or Suitcase: For your main luggage; Backroads typically transports this between accommodations. The Patagonia wheeled duffel is our trusted companion on adventure trips.
