Introduction
Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Keystone Colorado, offers a unique mix of big-resort adventure, laid-back vibe, and breathtaking scenery. Known for its world-class skiing and family-friendly amenities, Keystone is an ideal winter destination for people looking for something that is just a little different. Whether you’re a seasoned skier or a first-time visitor, Keystone has something to offer. Here’s your ultimate guide to making the most of your trip.
Where to Stay in Keystone
Something Unique:
- The Ski Tip Lodge: This is a very special place. It’s owned and managed by Keystone resorts but it is very different than any of their other properties. In the 1800’s this was a coaching stop. Later in it’s life it was home to Keystone ski resort founder. Now it is a beautiful and unique B&B. It has a real European feel and we love staying here. They only have 9 rooms, so plan ahead and book early.
River Run Village Condos:
- VRBO Selection: The River Run Village is a purpose built development of multiple condo buildings, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. There are plenty of condos available to rent and the village grocery store has a great selection for self catering when you don’t want to drive to the bigger stores in Frisco or Dillon.
Hotel Choices
- The Hyatt Place: A well run Hyatt that is very close to the River Run village. If you are a Hyatt business traveler this is a great way to use up all those points!
- The Keystone Lodge and Spa: This is a non-chain property that usually has some great last minute deals on rooms. It’s a big property that caters to business travelers using the Keystone Conference Center but during the winter season is popular with families enjoying the winter activities. It’s not in River Run village but has a reliable shuttle service to all areas of Keystone Resort. It is adjacent to the huge skating lake which is a lot of fun regardless of your skating ability.
Pro Tip: Book accommodations close to River Run Village for the best access to ski lifts, dining, and nightlife.
Where to Ski
Keystone Colorado Resort Trail Map:
- Bergman Bowl: The newest addition to Keyston’s ski terrain. It’s a classic Colorado bowl with huge skiable terrain. It offers at least one groomed run for those who love the cords.
- Dercum Mountain: Ideal for beginners and intermediate skiers, featuring wide runs and scenic views.
- North Peak: A favorite for more advanced skiers, with steeper terrain and thrilling moguls.
- The Outback: Offers challenging runs for experts and pristine backcountry skiing opportunities.
Unique Experiences at Keystone Colorado:
- Night Skiing: Keystone is one of the few resorts to offer night skiing. Gliding down the slopes under the stars is an unforgettable experience. But wrap up warm and pack some clear lens goggles. This night skiing is usually only on Friday and Saturday but it helps you get the biggest bang for your ski-pass $’s.
- Snow Fort: This is an annual thing at Keystone and they claim it’s the biggest Snow Forts in the world. You will need a lift pass to access it but the little kids love it. Careful you don’t lose the kids though (we speak from experience) because the tunnels are tight for an adult if you need to go looking for them!
- The Skating Lake: The Lakeside Village has a huge 5-acre skating lake with rentals available from the Keystone Adventure Center. You will find pick-up Ice Hockey, some seemingly pro-figure skaters and a whole bunch of people trying to keep their balance. Its a lot of fun after a day on the slopes.
- Snow Tubing: This is really popular so be sure to make a reservation. The tubing hill is huge and fast and guaranteed to make everyone laugh. The lift to get you back to the top is easy for riders of all ages to use.
- Stables Sleigh Ride. Take a horse drawn sleigh ride through the Soda Creek Valley. Wrap up, its cold but this is perfect for all ages if you prepare well!
Pro Tip: Purchase an Epic Pass for the best value and access to multiple ski resorts in Colorado.
Where to Eat
On-Mountain Dining:
- Timber Ridge Lodge: This is our favorite lodge on the mountain. It has recently been extended so even at busy times you can find a seat. And don’t forget that what used to be the Alpen Glow Stube restaurant is also available, it has a bar but you will need to bring your own food or purchase at the lodge. On sunny days, the deck seating offers amazing views.
Fine Dining in Keystone:
- Ski Tip Lodge: This B&B is a popular dinner venue, you don’t have to be a guest of the B&B to eat here. It’s a historic spot that offers a cozy atmosphere and gourmet dishes. It’s a fixed-price ($100+ a head) 4-course menu but definitely worth it. It is walkable from River Run Village, about 15 min walk.
- Keystone Ranch: This is a top-rated Colorado Restaurant located that has a steak-house type menu. It’s a drive from anywhere in the resort. Shuttles are available but in our experience, unreliable, so much better to drive.
Casual and Après-Ski Spots:
- Kickapoo Tavern: A lively spot for burgers, beers, and the best buffalo tater-tots you will ever have!
- Snake River Saloon: A keystone classic. A lively bar with greater bar-food, cocktails and live music on one side. A white cloth restaurant with a hearty menu of good-enough food on the other side. Always value for money and a great experience.
