James’ Choice :Sonos Roam 2 – A Travel-Friendly Speaker for High-Quality Sound Anywhere

Best portable Speaker for travel

This is my second Sonos Roam, I left the first one in a hotel room somewhere and surprise, surprise, it was never handed in.  Unusually, I would have bought a different brand as a replacement, just to try something new, but I love this speaker so much that I had to get an exact replacement.  What I really love about this is that I can use it stand-alone, as a Bluetooth speaker or I can use it as an extension to my Sonos system at home – so flexible.  I also love the small size and amazing sound.  I don’t travel anywhere without it.

The Sonos Roam 2 is a powerful contender among the best portable speakers for travel, offering a premium sound experience in a compact, travel-friendly design. Engineered with Sonos’s signature audio technology, the Roam 2 delivers rich, detailed sound that holds up well indoors and outdoors, making it an excellent choice for travelers who value sound quality on the go.

One thing I would change?

It is quite easy to turn the speaker power on by accident (when it is in your backpack) and that can drain the battery.  I would love it if they could make it a longer hold on the power button so accidentally turning the unit on is harder.

One thing I would change?

Updating the software on the speaker using the B&O app can be a pain.  It doesn’t get many updates, maybe 2 in the past year, but when it happens it can take multiple attempts.  I’m a pretty tech savvy guy who will persevere with software updates (i hate to think I may be missing out on any new features) but this has really challenged my patience in the past.

What would I change

I wish this speaker had a microphone, it would be so much more of a road-warrior tool if it did.  I have had other speakers in the past that did have a microphone and they were great for video meetings and long work calls. Other than that, I love it.

Shawn’s Choice: Ultimate Ears MEGABOOM 4 –  Bold Sound and Ultimate Durability for Adventurous Travelers

Best portable speakers for travel

I first came across this brand a few years ago when I was looking for waterproof portable speakers.  I’m a water guy and this is my go-to for beach and paddle-board and sailing trips.  It’s the third I have owned from this brand, the previous 2 met their end at the bottom of the ocean (my fault, not theirs) but the fact I keep coming back to this brand shows you how much I rate their products.

The Ultimate Ears MEGABOOM 4 is a standout choice among the best portable speakers for travel, known for its powerful, 360-degree sound and rugged durability. Designed with adventurous travelers in mind, the MEGABOOM 3 delivers big, immersive audio while withstanding the elements, making it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and globetrotters alike.

Specifications

• Dimensions: 8.9 x 3.4 inches

• Weight: 2 pounds

Sound Quality

The MEGABOOM 4 brings expansive, 360-degree sound with deep bass and vibrant clarity, filling even large spaces with ease. Ultimate Ears’ proprietary sound processing ensures rich, balanced audio, allowing every note to stand out.

Portability and Design

While the MEGABOOM 4 is slightly larger than some other portable options, it remains easy to carry and pack. The MEGABOOM 4’s bold color options and sleek design also add a touch of style, making it a fashionable choice among the best portable speakers for travel.

Battery Life and Charging Options

This speaker boasts an impressive 20-hour battery life, providing sound for an entire day and night on a single charge. It charges through a micro-USB port and supports the Ultimate Ears Power Up dock (sold separately) for wireless charging.

Durability and Weather Resistance

Built to withstand tough environments, the MEGABOOM 4 is IP67-rated for water and dust resistance, meaning it can handle full submersion in water and won’t be affected by sand or dust. This makes it an excellent choice for beach trips, poolside use, or rugged camping excursions.

What would I change?

The only thing that I don’t like about this is the weight.  At 2lb it is heavy for a travel speaker.  But I am willing to compromise to get its rugged capabilities and great sound.  A sailing buddy of mine has the same model and when we sail together we pair them as a stereo pair and the sound quality is excellent.
